The Report on the Work of the Government (hereinafter referred to as"the Report") is an authoritative source of information about the current situation in China for the international community, and has attracted more and more attention in the world with the elevation of China's international status. Therefore, study on the C-E translation of the Report is of great significance for China's communication with the outside world. In undertaking a systematic analysis of the C-E translation of the Report, this thesis applies Skopostheorie to the translation practice and adopts"adequacy"as the standard of translation evaluation. It points out that the"skopos"of the C-E translation of the Report is a"communicative purpose". To help achieve this purpose, this thesis puts forward four principles for the C-E translation of the Report– accuracy of content, idiomatic English, formal register and standard translation and innovation– and explores possible translation techniques at the lexical, syntactical, textual and cultural level respectively, with examples extracted from the 2011 Report and its English version. |
