An Analysis Of Anaphor's Variation In Distribution In Translation Between English And Chinese

Anaphora refers to the language phenomenon that an abbreviated expression can replace the thing or meaning of a full expression mentioned in the former context.And the brief or abbreviated expression is called anaphor.In recent forty years,anaphor remains a much-talked-about topic studied by many linguists.Scholars and linguists from different fields have made intensive discussions about anaphors from their respective research views,such as semantics,cognitive linguistics,etc.However,there are limitations and deficiencies among many theories.The theoretical framework selected by this paper is Systemic Functional Grammar proposed by Halliday,which is a relatively scientific and correct guiding theory.Anaphors draw both domestic and overseas researchers' attention due to its extensive application in both Chinese and English.There are an increasing number of researchers who begin to study anaphor from the view of comparison between Chinese and English.However,this thesis finds that there are seldom analyses of anaphor's variation in distribution in translation between English and Chinese.Therefore,this paper aims at studying anaphors' variation in distribution in translation between English and Chinese.Within the framework of Halliday's Systemic Functional Grammar,C-E translation and E-C translation news corpora are established.According to anaphors' classification proposed by Chen Ping,this thesis separately studies anaphors' variation in distribution in every category and concludes some variation regulations of anaphors in translation between English and Chinese.What's more,this paper attempts to explain reasons why anaphors' distribution changes after translation.Through analyzing,this paper finds anaphors' distribution will be changed because of variation of sentences' semantic structure,voice,etc.and location changing of adverb modifiers,attribute,etc.As we all know,Chinese is parataxis-prominent,which is a topic-prominent language,while English is hypotaxis one that focuses more on grammar.This thesis considering the difference of these two languages is the primary reason that leads to anaphors' variation in distribution in translation.
