Nowadays,export of cultural products is an important factor for economic growth and is also a vital channel of China’s communication with other countries in the world.Chinese film plays a vital role in cultural exports.Foreign readers want to know more about Chinese film and its history.A Brief History of Chinese Cinema,written by Professor Ding Yaping and published in 2008,is a comprehensive work about the history of Chinese film,and it mainly interprets the development of Chinese film for a hundred year from a historical dimension.The English version of the book will be of great significance to promote foreign readers’ understanding of Chinese society and culture and improve the international influence of Chinese society and culture.This article is a report on Chinese-English translation practice of the first chapter of A Brief History of Chinese Cinema.The translation practice is from the project of my supervisor Li Weibin entrusted by CIPG(China International Publishing Group)and the author translates the first chapter.Under the guidance of translation variation theory proposed by Professor Huang Zhonglian,kinds of translation variation techniques such as addition,deletion and edition are employed by the author in the translation based on an analysis of the specific context.In a way,wrong translation,misunderstanding and other problems are solved by the author through adding,deleting and other methods to convey key information and meet the demand of target readers as much as possible.Some typical examples explained in the report shows the feasibility of translation variation theory again in the translation of these texts.It is hoped that this report will provide some ideas for the future research of translation variation theory in these texts. |
