In the last few decades,quite a few researches have been made on anaphora in the field of contemporary English and Chinese linguistics.Of particular note is the transition from form study to function study,from the intrasentential to discourse.These researches cover the syntax and pragmatics of anaphora both in English and Chinese texts.According to antecedent or anaphor,anaphora can fall into more detailed categories.By considering anaphor as the standard,this thesis divides the phenomena into noun anaphora,pronoun anaphora and zero anaphora.After a comparison of anaphora in English and Chinese,differences along with similarities are found in terms of the accessibility of these referring expressions.These differences and similarities become real challenges in translation from English to Chinese.This thesis focuses on how English anaphora(noun anaphora,pronoun anaphora and zero anaphora)can be translated properly,by taking the characteristics of Chinese anaphora and expression traditions into account.Different translation methods are explored in the paper based on the translation of Marketing to the 90s Generation written by Anders Parment,published by Palgrave Macmillan Press in 2014.Literal translation is often used for anaphors with high accessibility,such as most cases of pronoun anaphora and zero anaphora.For some pronoun anaphora with high accessibility,the method of omission is adopted to avoid repetition.For those referring expressions with medium and low accessibility,such as noun anaphora and some pronoun anaphora,we usually repeat the whole or some part of the antecedents to avoid ambiguity.
