As an ancient temple architecture,the cave temple,which contains a large number of stone statues,mural paintings and other artifacts,is of high historical,religious,artistic and scientific value.Different from the cultural relics in museum,the cave temple with the prominent feature of immobility,is vulnerable to natural and man-made damage.It leads to a large part of the cultural relics suffered from different degrees of disease,such as fading,weathering,cracking,etc..In order to protect and restore the cave temple,some cultural relics protection units has proposed digitizing the cave temple.3D laser scanning technology,which is characterized by non-contact,high accuracy and all-weather,has provided the powerful technical support for the digitization of the cave temple.And many cultural relics protection units have been put 3D laser scanning technology as the first and main mean for the digitization.Also,by collecting the 3D discrete data of the surface of the cultural relics,the so-called point clouds,fine three dimensional model with the real size can be generated.This is of great significance for the protection,restoration and research of the cultural relics.However,the cave temple is mostly on a grand scale,which makes the data of whole life cycle of digital engineering to present a lot of distinguishing features,such as large numbers of documents and a huge amount of data size.If these data can not be manage effectively,it will bring much inconvenience to the practical use,especially to the data query.The paper takes BaoDing FoWan stone carving three dimensional surveying and digital engineering(first phase)for an example.After introducing the detailed work flow of the digital engineering for the cave temple,the data categories which require to be store and manage in the whole life cycle of the engineering are analyzed,and the relations between different data categories are summarized.Combined with the basic needs of data management and the needs of data users,after analyzing three kinds of data management methods which are existing,a general idea of management of digital engineering data of the cave temple is put forward.The main work is as follows:(1)According to management of the data of the whole life cycle of digital engineering for the cave temple,a method of combining file and database management is proposed,that is,the data and their attributes are stored separately.The data are stored with a file form in a data directory structure of the disk,while a large number of attributes of the data and the relations between them are stored into the database.In order to facilitate the management,the data are organized standardized,and the directory structure suitable for storing digital engineering data for the cave temple is designed,further more,the naming rules for the data are designed.(2)Choosing the relational database – Microsoft SQL Server to store the attributes of data and the relations between data.And then,the conceptual model and logical model of database are designed,in this process,the data dictionary is compiled and the security of data is designed as well.(3)A management system for the 3D digital engineering data of the cave temple is designed,which includes data management,data query,project management and other functional modules.This system can not only query the data in the disk by a large number of attributes stored in the database,but also query with each other according to the relations between data.More importantly,this system also has universal applicability,can be applied in most of the digital engineering of the cave temple.
