This thesis is composed of three parts: Source text, target text and translation report. The source text is selected from The Big Data Agenda: Data Ethics and Critical Data Studies, which is written by Annika Richterich. It is excerpted from the first part of The Big Data Agenda: Data Ethics and Critical Data Studies(Chapter 1-2),which includes around 14,500 words in total. There has been no Chinese translated version so far.Chapter 1 in the source text introduces the whole framework of this book and it is divided into 3 sub-sections which depicts that big data facilitates both our life and work but also brings some “trap” danger.Besides, this chapter also presents the definition of “critical data study”(CDS).Chapter 2 in the source text provides an initial overview of critical data study(CDS)and then expounds data study in detail. Also,“critical perspective” mentioned in the following sub-sections pays attention to the connection among three parts, separately critical data study(CDS),and concepts rooted in-post-structuralism,as well as the philosophy of science. This book highlights that the capacity for gathering, analyzing, and utilizing vast amounts of digital(user)data would raise significant ethical issues.Annika Richterich provides a systematic contemporary overview of the field of critical data studies that reflects on practices of digital data collection and analysis. The author develops a critical method for big data study and discussed related fields. The translator first presents backgrounds of translation task, and list difficulties in the task.According to the source text, the translator applies different methods and finally reaches a conclusion.Considering its trans-discipline and scientific feature, the translator decides to use Skopos theory by Hans J.Vermeer, namely Skopos rule, coherence rule and fidelity rule.Guided by Skopos theory, the translator addresses series of difficulties in translation of terms, long sentences, passive voice, pronouns and etc.at lexical, syntactic and textual level respectively. The translator depicts task background,(including translation background and author’s introduction),translation significance, case analysis and reflection. It’s concluded as an emerging area, big data involves different topics,so single theory may be not completely suitable.However,purpose-oriented Skopos theory proposed by Vermeer can guide the translator resolves cases with different methods.Skopos rule demands the translator focus on the purpose of translation;coherence rule asks the translator flexibly cope with sentence structure;fidelity rule finally requires the translator be faithful to source text.
