ObjectiveTo investigate the prevalence of chronic non-communicable disease(NCD)among teachers and staff in Soochow University, and to investigate the prevalence of NCD in different posts,so as to provide evidence for preventive health care and health education. To study the prevalence of NCD among men and women, teachers in different age groups, and to do more targeted interventions.Subjects and methodThe total number of in-service and retired staff of Soochow University in the year 2016 was 6764,which were the subjects of this investigation.Physical examination mainly includes gender, age, occupation, blood pressure, heart rate, internal and external gynecological routine examination, ear, nose and throat examination.Serum triglyceride(TG),total cholesterol(TC),fasting blood glucose and other indicators were measured. The image and the special inspection items are electrocardiogram, abdominal ultrasound, breast and gynecological ultrasound and chest X-ray examination.EpiData software was used to establish a database. All statistical analyses were conducted by using SAS 9.3 statistical software. All P-values were based on a two-sided test and a significance level of 0.05.The data which were normally distributed were described by mean and standard deviation, differences between the two groups were tested using t test. And categorical variables frequencies were used to describe categorical variables, differences between the two groups were tested using chi-squared test.ResultsThe prevalence rates of hypertension, diabetes mellitus, dyslipidemia, fatty liver and hyperuricemia in the teachers and staffs of Soochow University were 42.58%,8.97%,22.29%,28.46% and 18.94%,respectively.The prevalence rate of hypertension had significant differences between genders in the staff, and the prevalence rate of hypertension increased with age;at the same time, pre menopause hypertension prevalence rate was lower in women than in men,but increased rapidly after menopause. The prevalence of diabetes increases with age,and the prevalence rate is at its peak in the over 50 years of age group. The prevalence rates of hyperlipidemia, elevated blood lipids, hypercholesterolemia, high TG and mixed hyperlipidemia were 22.29%,31.91%,11.09%,14.18% and 2.98%,respectively.The prevalence rate of fatty liver(36.72%)in males was higher than that in females(18.43%).With the increase of age,the differences of prevalence between males and females decreased gradually, and there was no difference between males and females over the age of 70.The prevalence of HUA(24.20%)was higher in males than that in females(12.55%).Before the age of 60 years, the prevalence of hyperuricemia was higher in men than that in females, and there was no significant difference between males and females after 60 years of age.The prevalence of HUA is increasing with age,and this trend is particularly pronounced among women.ConclusionsThe prevalence of chronic non-communicable diseases was high in the study population, and health condition for teachers from colleges and universities in China was facing challenge. We should insist on periodical physic examination and enhance heath education to all, especially to male, middle aged and elderly teachers. To promote health levels in teachers and staff from colleges and universities, scientific research and health interventions should be enhanced.
