Purpose The aim of the study was to measure the changes of oral health-related quality of life(OHRQoL)before and after treatment with removable dental prostheses(RDPs),fixed dental prostheses(FDPs)or implant-supported fixed prostheses(ISFPs),and analyze the correlation between OHRQoL and age, gender, nationality, the number of tooth loss,Kennedy's classification and socioeconomic status(SES)in partially edentulous patients. Methods Partially edentulous patients were selected form Hospital of Stomatological,NingXia Medical University. The results of pretreatment and 6 weeks after treatment were recorded and OHRQoL was measured by using Chinese version of oral health impact profile(OHIP-14)and chewing function questionnaire(CFQ).Results Among the 129 patients, there were 63 men(48.8%)and 66 women(51.2%),aging 18-65 years old.Among them,40(31%)patients treat with FDPs,48(37.2%)patients with RDPs and 41(31.8%)patients with ISFPs.Before treatment, the scores of domain 2(physical pain)and domain 3(psychological discomfort)analysis were the highest. After treatment, the OHRQoL and chewing function of the patients were significantly improved compared to before treatment. There was no correlation between gender, nationality, number of missing teeth and OHRQoL(P>0.05),while there was positive correlation between age, socioeconomic status and OHRQoL(P<0.05).The mean values of OHIP-14 scores of FDPs and ISFPs after treatment were significantly higher than that of RDPs(P<0.05),however,there was no significant differences between FDPs and ISFPs(P>0.05).The improvement ofOHRQoL in patients with Kennedy's type I and IV dentition defect after FDPs and ISFPs was better than that of type II and III.Conclusions Before treatment, the effect of tooth loss on OHRQoL was mainly reflected in two aspects: physical pain and psychological discomfort domain. The OHRQoL of the patients was all significantly improvement after treatment with FDPs,ISFPs and RDPs.In aspects of the correlation between demographic factors and OHRQoL,there were no correlation between gender, nationality, number of tooth loss and OHRQoL,however, there was positive correlation between age,and SES and OHRQoL.Compared with patients treated with FDPs and ISFPs,the improvement of OHRQoL after treatment with RDPs was least, especially among the young people. The improvement of OHRQoL in patients with Kennedy's type I and IV dentition defect after FDPs and ISFPs was better than that of type II and III.
