| Objective:To assess the efficacy, safety and recurrence rate of using modified Sheng Yang Yi Wei Tang in the treatment of Diarrhea-Predominant Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS-D) (liver stagnation spleen deficiency syndrome), as well as to explore the mechanism of action of Sheng Yang Yi Wei Tang and Wind-Dispelling drugs when applied to the treatment of IBS-D.Methods:60 patients with IBS-D (liver stagnation spleen deficiency syndrome) were recruited from The Affiliated Hospital of Chengdu University of Traditional Chinese Medicine, Gastroenterology and Geriatrics clinic, and were randomly divided into treatment group and control group, with 30 in each group. The treatment group was given modified Sheng Yang Yi Wei Tang for treatment; while the control group was given Pinaverium Bromide tablets and Montmorillonite powder for treatment. The treatment lasted for 4 weeks. The drug efficacy, symptom score, changes in clinical symptoms, adverse drug reactions, blood, stool and urine test, liver and kidney function test, and ECG changes before and after treatment were compared. A 3 months follow-up was performed on effective cases, while the recurrence rate was observed for patients in each group. The data collected were processed and analysed using SPSS19.0 statistical software.Results:(1) The total effective rate for the treatment group was 93.33%, which was higher than the control group (56.67%).The difference in drug efficacy between the treatment group and the control group was statistically significant (p<0.05);(2) The difference in the improvement of clinical symptom between the treatment group and the control group was statistically significant (p<0.05);(3) No adverse reactions were observed in the treatment group or the control group;(4) The recurrence rate for effective cases in the treatment group during the 3 months follow-up period was 17.86%, which is lower than the control group (52.94%). The difference in the recurrence rate was statistically significant (p<0.05).Conclusion:The efficacy of Sheng Yang Yi Wei Tang in the treatment of IBS-D (liver stagnation spleen deficiency syndrome) is significant. Symptoms of patients improved more significantly in the treatment group than in the control group. The decoction which is safe to use and has a low recurrence rate is suitable for widespread clinical application. |
