ObjectiveTranslated task-specific self-efficacy scale for self-care(SESS) into Chinese, amended it taking the cultural background in China into consideration, re-translated into English to assure a valid translation. We also want to investigate the status of self-efficacy and patient entering in to supportive periodontal therapy(SPT), identify whether or not oral health care-specific self-efficacy can predict patient entering in to SPT in Tianjin, China. Method1.During March and August 2014, we translated task-specific self-efficacy scale for self-care(SESS) into Chinese, amended it taking the cultural background in China into consideration, re-translated into English to assure a valid translation, invited nursing experts to revise the content of the scale. We used Chinese SESS conducted on 300 periodontal disease patients to verify the reliability and validity.2.From November 2014 to September 2015, the researcher distributed the questionnaires including socio-demographic questionnaire and task-specific self-efficacy scale for self-care(SESS, Chinese version) to 280 chronic periodontal disease patients. The demographic data used descriptive statistics analysis. The difference of continuous and categorical variables between two groups(whether or not entering SPT) were analyzed by independent sample t test, Mann-Whitney U test and the Chi-square test respectively, binary logistic regression analysis was used to assess the association between self-efficacy for self-care and whether or not entering SPT. The adjusted ORs with 95% CIs were estimated and a p-value of 0.05 or less was considered to indicate significance. Result1. The introduction of Chinese SESS: The Chinese version of SESS consist of 15 items, three common factors were extracted, which explained 60.145% of variance of the total scale,scale-level CVI valued 0.96, significant correlations were shown in the scores of the SESS, which were observed between test and re-test(r=0.922), sufficient internal consistency(Cronbach's ?=0.879).2. The application of Chinese SESS: 288 questionnaires were distributed and 280 questionnaires screened in the study. The SESS scores were 57.03±9.08.Single factor analysis: The mean age of patients not entering into SPT(46.53±12.85) was significantly higher than the mean age of patients entering into SPT(43.26±13.01)(P<0.05). Patients with chronic periodontal disease that entered into SPT were more serious than patients not entered(P<0.01). The mean of SESS score in patients with entering into SPT were significantly higher than patients with not entering SPT( P<0.001).Binary logistic regression analysis: self-efficacy for self-care was independently associated with the level of not entering in to SPT. Compared with the high-scoring SESS group(60-75), of patient entrance to SPT for the middle-(54-59) and low-(15-53) scoring groups were 0.393[95% CI: 0.208~0.743] and 0.197 [95% CI: 0.105-0.370], respectively. Age, severity of periodontitis and SESS maybe the influence factors in patients entering into SPT. Discussion1. The Chinese version of SESS has a high reliability and validity, which could be used as a tool for measuring periodontal disease patients' trust in China. With concise and clear items, patients with chronic periodontal disease can easily understand the consent of SESS. SESS was recommended as a assessment tool to evaluate the level of oral health task-specific self-efficacy and effective to provide a theoretical basis for promoting oral health behavior.2. Our study showed the SESS was in the medium level among Chinese patients with chronic periodontal disease and the proportion of entering into SPT was low. a positive relationship was showed between task-specific self-efficacy and level of entering SPT. Patients with higher SESS score were more likely to enter SPT after completing non-surgical treatment. Effective intervention should be explored to improve the consciousness of oral health self-care and promote oral health behavior in Chinese patients with chronic periodontal disease.
