Objective: To survey the incidence of dry eye among visual display terminal(VDT)operators in railway workers at Sujiatun in City Shenyang and analyze the relationship of the prevalence of dry eye and working hours among VDT workers.To discuss the possible mechanism of dry eye and improve the understanding of VDT-related diseases,providing the basis for the diagnosis,prevention and treatment of dry eye.Methods: 126 VDT operators in railway workers at Sujiatun in City Shenyang were selected to do dry eye questionnaire from August 1,2015 to September 1,2015.They were examined with slit lamp,refraction,tear film break-up time,lake of tears height,corneal staining and Schirmer test.The data was analyzed with statistical software SPSS19.0,and P <0.05 was considered statistically significant.Results: 126 cases containing 252 eyes were VDT operators at daily work,all males and average age was 44.74 years old.There were about 88%(112 cases)of them complaining the eye dryness which was the most common complaint among them.According to the diagnostic criteria of dry eye,58 cases of dry eye were diagnosed with which the prevalence rate was 46%.Among 58 cases,the prevalence rate of dry eye in 30 to 40 years old was 22%,in 40~50 years old was 44.8%,in 50~60 years old was 67%.There was statistically significant differences between the three groups.Among 58 cases,the prevalence rate of dry eye was 11% whose work experience was 5 to 10 years,42% whose work experience was 10 to 15 years,68% whose work experience was more than 15 years.There was statistically significant differences between the three groups.The prevalence rate of dry eye was 11.8% in high exposure group,10% in moderate exposure group and 0% in low exposure group among workers whose work experience was 5 to 10 years.There was no statistically significant differences between the three groups.The prevalence rate of dry eye was 69.5% in high exposure group(>10h),37.5% in moderate exposure group(6~10h)and 16.7% in low exposure group(3~6h)among workers whose work experience was 10 to 15 years.There was statistically significant differences between the three groups.The prevalence rate of dry eye was 82.3% in high exposure group,62.5% in moderate exposure group and 25% in low exposure group among workers whose work experience was more than 15 years.There was statistically significant differences between the three groups.Conlusions: Prolonged exposure to VDT is not conducive to eye health,and lead to high prevalence rate of dry eye.It showed a positive correlation of the prevalence rate of dry eye with age.It also showed a positive correlation with prevalence rate of dry eye and work experience and work time.The prevalence rate of dry eye was significantly increased with work experience and work time increasing.
