Study On The Spatial Layout Of The Pattern Carving Mansion And Its Relation

Dongting Dongshan,referred to as Dongshan,isa small island located in the Taihu Lake and surrounded on three sides by water.It originally belonged to Wu County which is Dongshan town,Wuzhong District,Suzhou City now.In the town of Dongshan and its surrounding,many residential old houses is concentrate distributed.However,the majority of these residential old houses in Dongshan were developed in the Ming and Qing dynasties.The buildings constructed in the period of the Republic of China are very rare,let alone the ones survived in the special period of social unrest.The pattern carved mansion is one of the most well-preserved residential buildings during that era,which gives a complete display of the Dongshan special architectural fashion.Pattern carved mansion,also known as "Chunzai building",takes the meaning of an old saying "people always feel warm like in the spring when they stay in the sunshine".The pattern carved mansion was built by Xiangshanbang craftsmen's handin the 11th year of Republic of China(AD 1922).It is beautifully carved with strange structure and belongs to "Shanghai cotton yarn king",Xizhi Jin.People usually praise and enjoy the fine carving art of the pattern carved mansion.However,from my research,due to the merchant class characteristics of Jin,the the spatical layout of the pattern carved mansion has several historic characteristics of that era.The paper analyzes the relationship between the horizontal,vertical,internal and external space of Dongshan pattern carved mansion by using the research method from whole to partial thenreturn to whole,and excavates the key points which were easily ignored by people in the past.Also,the paper is based on the field study for the basis of the content and afield mapping and research for the pattern carved mansion was conducted.As a side according to the paper,I interviewed several craftsmen from Xiangshanbang and staff from the hotel of pattern carved mansion at the same time.For the part of literature,I combined information of the Ming and Qing Dynasties historical materials with some local history and so on.Moreover,I try to present a well-known traditional dwelling building from a brand new perspective through integratingthe spatial layout of its appearance as well as the inner humanistic thought,which makes people have a new understanding and thinking about the residential building of the Dongting businessman.
