China is in the rapid development stage of the process of urbanization, during which a large number of rural land is transformed into the urban construction land. This situation is obvious in Suzhou, the “State-Level Pilot City of Urban and Rural Integration” and “Point of Contact City of Urban and Rural Integration Comprehensive Supplementary Reform”.More and more peasants have lost their land due to the passive urbanization in Suzhou. Therefore, the resettlement of peasants has become an unavoidable social problem.Currently, the government attempts to solve the problem through the construction of peasant resettlement communities. However, due to the lack of research on peasant resettlement communities, the practice of copying the urban residential patterns without considering the needs of residents makes the planning and construction of resettlement communities encounter with many problems. As the component of urban space and the important node of residents’ daily life, the public space of residential areas plays a significant role in city communication and neighborhood aggregation. Therefore,it is of great theoretical and practical importance to put forward the relevant optimization strategies and practical researches on the public space of peasant resettlement communities in Suzhou based on the demands of residents.First of all, this paper conducts the study of domestic and foreign literatures and relevant theories, and briefly describes the background of peasants’ resettlement in Suzhou and the main features of peasant resettlement communities.According to the difference of location, construction age, population size and residential form, this paper selects six typical peasant resettlement communities in Suzhou to do the site survey, and conducts interviews and questionnaires with residents. This paper finds out the corresponding problems in four aspects of the public space in Suzhou peasant resettlement communities, including the public service facilities, transportation space, green space and other outdoor space, and then analyzes the reasons from the ideological and planning aspect.Secondly, based on the analysis of the particularity of social properties, lifestyle and psychological feelings of residents living in Suzhou peasant resettlement communities, and the Maslow’s demand hierarchy theory, this paper draws out residents’ demands in the physiological, behavioral and psychological aspect.Through the construction of residents’ demand level in Suzhou peasant resettlement communities, this paper concludes the residents’ demand and puts forward related development requirements for residential public space. Finally, under the guidance of residents’ demand level in Suzhou peasant resettlement communities, this paper puts forward the specific optimization strategies for the public service facilities, traffic space, green space and other outdoor space, and takes the practice and application of Yupan Homeland as an example to test the rationality and feasibility of the theoretical strategy.
