With the aging of the Chinese society being more and more serious, and the popularity of public facilities, the elderly's problems in the process of using public facilities need to be solved. This research Takes ATM as an example,to study the universality problem of the public facilities, through empirical research to explore public self-help facilities usage in the elderly and young people, finds usability problems and then optimizes design to make the elderly can use the public facilities fairly.Through qualitative and quantitative methods such as the questionnaire method, usability testing, interviews after test and users' participating design,This study explores the existing ATM usability problems in the process of operation, such as inviting young users and older users to participate the usability testing experiment with eye-tracking system of the existing ATM interface.the tasks includes some common functions, like "password","withdrawal","show balance",Through the analysis of experimental data,we find usability problems, and comparing the results of two groups of eye movement, find out their differences in the operation process, according to the guidance of the general design principles to optimize the problems found.through participatory design, redesigning the layouts,so as to reduce the differences of using between different ages.and then we did the same experiment through the same steps to ensure the effectiveness of the optimized design.According to the results of different ages in the using of the existing differences,we found the usability problems in the process of operation,by improving the design, reduce the differences between different age groups, that optimized design can improve the usability of user level, has the feasibility.Existing studies of public facilities' interface are less, and based on qualitative research mostly, the research takes ATM interface as an example to study the commonality of public facilities;Throughout the study, the method mainly around the qualitative and quantitative analysis, combined with the subjective and the objective, has more comprehensive research dimensions, after experimental verification, the optimized design meets the requirements of the public facilities of generality, and illustrates thefeasibility and validity of the research methods in public facilities, and can be applied to other studies of public facilities, has a certain practical significance.
