This thesis proposed a communication system based on the Beidou satellite system for electric energy metering, providing a complete solution for the automated power energy measuring of the small-scale hydropower stations in remote areas with insufficient communication path. Small scale hydropower stations are often located in remote, sparsely populated areas. The means of communication in these areas are extremely limited, making the conventional automatic data acquisition techniques, such as GSM, WIFI and power line carrier channel, unavailable or unmaintainable. Satellite techniques provide a feasible solution for such a scenario. It ensures a realtime, reliable and secure data transmission. At the same time, commands can also be sent to the power meters through satellites, which realizes the off-peak management and the detection of power faults.Beidou system is domestically-made in China. After more than 10 years' services, Beidou system has been proved to be a mature and reliable system, which has a full capability to meet the requirements of power data acquisition. Point of multipoint data transmission architecture, involving electrical interface matching, communication protocol conversion, packet delivery, message processing, collecting cluster communication terminal and other key technologies, are designed according to the characteristics of the communication link of Beidou system. Additionally, this work designed a power data collection and management software system with a capability of data acquisition and analysis, parameter maintenance, reports generation, web management and so on. It guarantees the automatic operation of the whole grid. The results show that the electric energy acquisition system based on the Beidou satellite system is reasonable in structure, competitive in cost and good in adaptability. The proposed system is a typical successful case of the evolution of traditional power grid to the coming smart grid.
