Research On The Adjustment Of The Building Space Based On The Staircase

Staircases not only take the function of the vertical transportation, which means it can be utilized as vertical channels connecting building spaces with different elevations, but also act as a spatial element, which can influence the form, atmosphere and composition of space. There are a large number of theoretical studies about the staircase in China and abroad. Theories mainly include the material, the configuration, the construction technology, and the safe evacuation of the staircase. Very little attention has been paid and no in-depth studies have been conducted about the relationship between the staircase and the building space.This research focuses on both the indoor and the outdoor staircase which can be used as an element of space, and employs a variety of analysis methods, such as comparative analysis, case analysis, system analysis. I give an overview of the development of both domestic and classify staircases according to different criteria. In this thesis, design principle, representation forms and design methods of the staircase which works as a modeling element attending the space composition and how staircases organize and differentiate the building space have been analyzed in detail. This research explores the concrete application about the staircase, by participating in the case that adding a staircase to the Wenke building of Nanjing University of Technology. This research enriches related theories about the staircase and provides guidance and reference for design in practice.
