Modern hospital is a kind of building which has complex function and short but sharply developed history. As it seems quite difficult to carry out the overall study on it, an available method to research hospital building is to narrow the research target by selecting a representative part of it. Care units are the basic function units of hospitals. Study on care units will help make the research more representative and more feasible. The Servant and Served Space Theory is a summary of Louis I. Kahn’s idea about Space and Order. Domestic studies on Louis I. Kahn usually focus on the content of the theory more than the application of that. The study of the theory and care units focuses on two aspects:Firstly, the context and content of the servant and served space concept are discussed by analyzing Kahn’s experience and works. The analysis of the theory details on space distribution, structure unit, double grid and structure-space order to help understand Kahn’s idea about space and order; Secondly, the analysis of care units focuses on two points:space pattern and function distribution. With comparison between care units and Kahn’s theory, a specific case is discussed to optimize the space organization form of care units. Furthermore, by reviewing Kahn’s idea of order, memorial, silence and light, some other topics about hospital building are discussed briefly with Alvar Aalto’s and Le Corbusier’s hospital works.
