The rail carriage is one of the main equipments to transport and assembly the missiles. In traditional design method, the designers must accumulate rich experience. At the same time, it's easy to make mistakes during design. The low efficiency of the traditional design method can not match the requirement of market. So this paper researches into combining the modular design and parametric design to realize the rapid design system of rail carriage.This paper, based on the traditional CAD theory, creatively introduces the theory of modular design technology and variant design which is the key technology for rapidly intelligent parametric design of rail carriage. First, it divides the rail cars into server modules according to the theory of modular design and the experience in rail carriage design. Then it uses the technology of parametric and feature modeling, such as the UG/WAVE, suppressing or free of feature, to build the module library and standard part library. At last, the rapid design system of rail carriage is developed base on UG-NX7.5 platform. The system provides the functions to select the category of rail carriage and input the design parameters, then select the useful modules and assembly them automatically to generate the completed three-dimensional model. After that, do the subsequent tasks, such as check interferences, generate engineering drawing and creating the bill of material, quick print and so on. These functions can match the requirement of rail cars design system.The system of rail carriage design developed based on modular design technology by author mixed the design standard, expert knowledge and experience together. It realized the rapid design of rail carriage and succeeded in practical application to improve the design efficiency.
