With the formation of modern shipbuilding mode and development of advanced manufacturing technology, modular shipbuilding technology has been recognized as an advanced stage of "Hull construction, outfitting and painting integration, regional shipbuilding technology". The essence of modular shipbuilding technology lies on the two main features of modern shipbuilding technology– integration of design and manufacture and integration of hull construction Outfitting and painting, which means initial design will reflect manufacturing requirements(including building methods, building techniques, task package division, schedules and equipment delivery date, etc).In recent years, ship modular technology has become a new technology leading shipbuilding countries competing to develop. However, due to the late start of China's naval modular technology research, the current study mainly focuses on the building of function modules and modules standardization, but fails to address the environment and methods of modular design, so problems arise when modular design is applied into actual manufacturing. Therefore, related study on buildability of modular design is particularly important. Only when the building problems have been taken into consideration in the process of modular design, can the modular design plan be scientific and practical and the theoretic results of modular technology research be implemented in actual application.This paper will collect relevant information on modular shipbuilding technology at home and abroad, and to do an overview of the status. It will emphasize on analyzing the development and implementation of modular ship design and manufacturing technology, so as to provide ideas and constructive suggestions to the research and application of intermediate-products-oriented ship modular design in China. The study includes:⑴M odular design theories and their characteristics as well as the major problems when applied into actual ship design and building;⑵Restrictions and rules required to follow in the process of modular division based on buildability;⑶Methods and practical examples of modular division of ship structure based on Fuzzy Mathematic theories;⑷Study on sim ulation m ethods of m odular design of ship structure;⑸Study on simulation methods of modular ship assembly and examples of application.
