As advanced modern mechanical design methods, modular design and parametric design are widely used in modern product design. By making a systemic research and analysis on modular design and parametric design techniques, thesis of parameter-driven modular design is proposed and a detailed project of parameter-driven modular design is expounded and a computer aided system for parameter-driven modular design is developed to meet the actual demand on mechanical design. The main contents and achievements of this paper are described as follows:(1) By making a synthesis of the characteristics in modular design and parametric design of mechanical product, the concept of parameter-driven modular design is proposed, the process of parameter-driven modular design is analyzed and a general outline of parameter-driven modular design is constructed.(2) The creating process of parametric module family is proposed based on the structure of parametric module family. The parameter mapping script and expression of design flow for programmed module family are analyzed. The integration of process and the fusion of data for modular design and parametric design are achieved.(3) Three kinds of module instantiation process including reuse of module based on parameter matching, parametric design based on simple module family and programmed design based on complicated module family are constructed. Performance prediction approach for mechanical product based on parametric module family is proposed to achieve exact evaluation for parameter-driven modular design of mechanical product.(4) A computer aided system for parameter-driven modular design of mechanical product is developed. The structure, functional model and database model of system are designed. The solution to the key techniques of the software achievement is expatiated. The system can support parameter-driven modular process effectively which helps improve the efficiency and the success ratio of the mechanical product design.
