Analysis On The Space Design Of University For The Aged

With the acceleration of aging society in China, the work on aging pays more attention to the spiritual and cultural needs of the elderly and greatly develops the education of them. The university for the aged, as the main form of school running to educate the aged, has received extensive popularity and attention. The society and the elderly education practitioners have also become increasingly concern about the development and construction of it. In the last three decades, the university for the aged has formed its own characteristics. Wuhan, as the economic and cultural center of the center area of China, is one of the cities which own the university for the aged first. This paper takes the university for the aged in Wuhan as an example. It starts from the design of architectural space, combines with the physiological, psychological and behavioral characteristics of the elderly, and analyzes the special needs of them for the architectural space, Meanwhile, I summarize the following problems of the architectural space of the university for the aged by field survey: the single form of learning space, the lack of space for entertainment, not enough communication in public space and the low utilization of the outdoor space.This paper concludes four parts:The first part focuses on the idea and mode of the education of the elderly at home and abroad, and relative references of the university for the aged. Secondly, it describes the physiological, psychological and behavioral characteristics and needs of the elderly. Then, it analyzes the special demands of them for the architectural space. At last, it introduces the construction and space composition of the university for the aged. Thirdly, after field investigation to some typical university for the aged in Wuhan, I come to the conclusion of some problems about the architectural space of the university for the aged in current times from the analysis of the basic construction of the university for the aged, the total plane layout, the function of space organization, and the present situation and evaluation of the space usage. The last part bases on the learning space, entertainment space, public space and outdoor space of the university for the aged. By considering the size, form, limiting surface of each space and the relation, physical environment of them, it puts forward some design strategies about each functional space of the university for the aged to meet the learning, exchange, and leisure demands of the aged better.
