Fabre's Book of Insects, studying the behavior of insects, was written by French writer Farber(Jean-Henri Casimir Fabre,1823-1915),and published in ten volumes in 1879-1910.It can be seen as a literary work,a natural science work as well as a popular science work, which had been widely disseminated and valued in China from 1920s to the present(2016).This phenomenon is rare in popular science and publishing history,so it is typical and should be used as a typical case study. But at present, studies of this book only stay in the simple introduction of translation history, philosophical reflection and the level of Chinese education. The research on Farber's scientific thought and the unique science communication phenomenon of his book all need further discussions. This article mainly takes Fabre's Book of Insectst as the research object.According to the National Bibliography(1981-2011 paper and electronic edition,no data of the paper and electronic version of the National Bibliography after 2011),Retrieval of National Library Collection, assisted by book purchase websites such as Bai Lian Books,Dang Dang,Jingdong and Amazon, statistical data shows that there already have 831 kinds of Book of Insect published, involving 237 publishers(see Appendix 1).First,this article analyses Farber's life, scientific thought and communication concept, and provides basis for the later chapters on its spread in China.Second, sorting out the introduction and dissemination of its early translated works in China.Third, according to the general analysis of the translated works and publication conditions in different periods in Appendix 1,classification statistic was conducted on 831 kinds of publications, they were divided into popular science, literature, new curriculum and others, the social reasons behind the data will also be discussed.Fourth, this paper mainly focuses on the science communication of Book of Insect which under categories of popular science and new curriculum, and do research on the natural history concepts, research method as well as Farber's views on natural history and mathematical science.Through the above study, the following conclusions are drawn:1.Fabre's Book of Insectst was translated into China in 1920s,but before 80s,even by 90s,the publication and dissemination of the book was still very limited,it began to rise steadily until the end of twentieth Century and early twenty-first Century.Among them, the most prominent year is 2013,the connection between the New Curriculum Standard and Book of Insect, has become an important reason for the surge in publication of it.2.Fabre's Book of Insectst,as a book with both scientific and humanistic features, had been recognized it's scientific and science popularization value when it was first introduced into China. However, with the emergence of different translation versions, the value of literature has been further affirmed, but the scientific value has been weakened.on the one hand,it is related to the preference of introduction and reading guide of the translated works, and on the other hand,it may be related to the overall situation of the popular science works' publication in China.3.According to the publication, translation and introduction, translation selection as well as the feedback from readers, the dissemination and introduction of Farber's scientific ideas is a weak point.Through some recollection articles about Farber's English version of Book of Insect, and studies of Farber in foreign countries,Farber has his own thoughts and views on the natural history, mathematical science and experimental science, and they all permeated into his research on insects, which can be an important enlightenment for us to understands science and scientific method today. Therefore,we need to rethink Farber and his scientific thoughts, which is also theThis paper discusses the communication state, characteristics and reasons of Fabre's Book of Insectst in China, rethinks the unique communication phenomenon in it,and provides a case basis for the theory and practice of science communication.research significance of this article.
