Abstract/Summary:
With the in-depth development of digital networked society, the data and advanced information digitalizing technology has sprung up.The emergence of mass information led to a great change to human digital living environment, bringing the users who are both information producers and information consumers into the big data world, and our life, work and learning are deeply affected by this circumstances. Accordingly, in order to meet the real demands of digitalized information environment, each information user should possess data literacy, which has become an indispensible standard measuring the social and personal basic awareness of data processing. As the backbone of the society in the future, college students’ data literacy plays a crucial role in the development of the society, thus establishing the standard of data literacy is significant in practice.Data literacy is a kind of competence related to data collection, data processing, etc. Generally, it involves two levels: one is the ideological level, such as data awareness, basic norms, etc; another is practical skill level, such as data collection, data processing, etc. Drawn from the existing literature, this study explored the data literacy of college students with case study and the coding techniques of grounded theory.The main contents and results are as follows:(1)Extracting the core indicators of data literacy. Taking college students who have the experience of processing data as the research objects, three conceptual categories are extracted with the methods of think aloud and interviews collecting data, and the coding techniques of grounded theory analyzing data, that is the individual characteristics, core skills and support skills.(2)Developing a data literacy scale. Based on the literature research, interview and coding, the data literacy scale is developed, and the data of pilot study is analyzed by factor analysis and EFA, filtering the scale items and forming the formal data literacy scale.(3)Constructing a data literacy influential factors model. Based on the theoretical model, the interactive relationship between the three first indicators(conceptual categories)and eight second indicators are presented, that is pre-operation has a significant influence on post-operation, fundamental factor(data awareness) exerts a great impact on other factors, and core factors( three second indicators of core skills) are largely affected by mediating factors(five second indicators of individual characteristics and support skills. The significant mutual interactions between the three first indicators are shown, but not the one-way relationships.(4)Establishing a relatively perfect data literacy index system with localization characteristic in the order of importance. Using structural equation, the indicators of data literacy index system are sorted by their importance(correlation degree) and the index system is finally established. It covers three first indicators, eight second indicators and sixty third indicators, corresponding to the superior indicators, the indicators in each level are sorted by their importance.
