China is entering the "high-risk society" today, various risk events occur frequently. Social media, which is represented by WeChat, Micro Blog, Qzone, Baidu Tieba, etc, is flourishing in in recent years. As an important change form of media, it has an impact on people’s perception of risks which is different from traditional media, and also affects the social amplification of risk. The social amplification of risk is a hot topic in the study of risk communication. The“amplification”, which is in“The social amplification of risk”, not only means the serious signals or controllable signals related to the risk which are sent to society, but also means the consequences of the risk caused by manufacturing or restricting the ripple effect.Through the literature search and case analysis, I find that the risk issues are more vague, the risk rumors are more rampant, the risk experience is more realistic, the mass incidents are more frequent and the ripple effect is more intense in the context of social media because of a participation of social media in the process of the social amplification of risk. The social amplification of risk can be achieved by exposing the news, agenda-setting, rhetorical discourse, group mobilization and stigma. The technical support, the unique media culture, the regulatory mechanism of social media, the various issues in the period of social transformation, the mechanism of practical interests expression, the complex Game of multiple subjects, and the personal media dependence, cognitive model, mental state, media literacy, etc, in social media era, are the underlying causes of the social amplification of risk under the circumstance of social media.
