There is an urgent need to integrate the traditional teaching methods with modern technologies in the educational field. Application of digital technologies have been changing the ways of obtaining information and also teaching methods. Rapid development of digital technologies have ushered in the emergence and rapid development of multimedia teaching. Research in multimedia teaching will help to optimize the relationship between teaching and learning, thus improving both teaching and learning.This research aims to explore the application of multimedia teaching to the course of Jewelry Techniques. The research mainly covers: 1. Digitalization of various teaching materials like texts, pictures, 3D models, animations, audios and videos; 2 building of an interactive multimedia courseware system which integrates voices, pictures, texts, animations and videos through Director. This research focuses on the non-linear interactive operation of the multimedia courseware system realized through Lingo Language of Director. The system established in this project is comparable to a virtual dictionary of Jewelry Techniques, enabling the students to learn about the main devices, facilities and techniques involved in jewelry designing and production. Through introduction to the related theories and operational simulation, the students could obtain some preliminary knowledge of jewelry techniques before their hands-on operation.The multimedia courseware system developed in this research project has many advantages: First of all, by optimizing teaching materials, and facilitating accumulation and sharing of these materials, this courseware system can improve the teachers’ work efficiency as well as stimulating their enthusiasm and creativity. Then, with the system, teachers can adjust their teaching whenever necessary based on the actual teaching effect and students’ real-time feedbacks, improving teaching flexibility. Moreover, the system can cater to different needs of the students, achieving the goal of individualized teaching. In addition, the system can enhance the initiatives of the students by giving them the chance to partly decide the content, sequence and pace of their learning based on their own needs. Lastly, by exploring of the application of digital technologies to teaching and functions of multimedia courseware system, this research can offer a new direction to the theoretical and practical studies of multimedia teaching.
