With the rapid development of solid-state lighting LED (Light Emitting Diode), LED is increasingly used in our daily life, new high-power white LED light source has obvious advantages over conventional lighting. Compared with traditional lighting, LED has lower power consumption, longer life, smaller size, more environmental protection, better modulation performance, higher sensitivity and response more quickly. Based on all these advantages, visible light communication was proposed by some reserchers. With the rapid development of VLC, image sensor communication (ISC) is driven to be developed, too. ISC is a branch of VLC, it is a kind of application of VLC. The difference between the two communication systems is the receiver. The receiver of VLC is specialized photodetector, while the receiver of ISC is image sensor.The VLC system and ISC system are introduced, the background of the two systems are given, the research status is presented. The principles of VLC syetem and ISC system preseted. The structure of the two systems are presented in detail, from the transmitting terminal to the receiving terminal. Then, the image processing, the very important part of VLC, is introduced, including edge algorithm, region growing method and frame difference method, and the simulation results of the algorithms are compared. Moreover, the ISC system based on LED arrays are studied, the location of LED is given. Finally, the simulations of the experiment are given.
