Modern world is facing with the problems of desertification and the exploitation of dessert resources. To study the desert environment and exploit desert resources, different kinds of surveys have been used for a long time. With the development of technology in recent years, robots have been designed to monitor desert hinterland as a replacement of labor work and fixed-point monitors. Compared with labor work and fixed-point monitors, robots extend the scope and the time of environment monitor, highly improving the efficiency. By analyzing the data collected by robots in desert hinterland, people could acquire real-time status of the desert environment, which provides crucial data to slow down the desertification and fully develop desert resources.Desert robot multi-module communication system is designed to achieve reliable and stable data communication, real-time desert environment data collection, and remote control and network construction of robots. Desert robots in this paper are in the basic hardware platform of desert exploring robots, basing on multi-module communication system and desert hinterland data collecting system. With data transceiver radio, ZigBee communication, GPS data communication and GPS positioning technology, C8051F023 MCU is adapted as the main system controller to achieve several networking and data communications under different wireless technology. It also achieves positioning and anti-thief functions by GPS technology.Firstly, this paper tells the overall construction in the multi-module communication system of desert robots, then explains the designing of main and subordinate communication modules, positioning & anti-thief module, powering module, and hardware circuit. Secondly, it tells the design of protocol in communication system, including the network address division, data package construction, data package processing, as well as the system software by C language. Meanwhile, it explains the project and software design of positioning & anti-thief functions. At last, this paper analyses the testing results of the multi-module communication system of desert robots.The experiment and testing results of the multi-module communication system of desert robots shows that the communication system meets the need of desert robots communication. The multi-module communication system of desert robots mentioned in this paper has already been in practical use and stable function.
