Ming Dynasty is an important period for the development of the ancient archives. In Hongwu period, the archival work has been greatly developed because of good governance of the emperor Zhu Yuanzhang, while in late Ming Dynasty, the archival work staggered and even declined because of the rulers’ desperation of affairs of state and official corruption. So the archival work of Hongwu period is an essential part for the entire archival work in Ming Dynasty. By analyzing the archival work in Hongwu period can help us understand the basic overview of the archival work in Ming Dynasty.By querying historical data and analyzing results of previous studies, this paper makes a more detailed presentation on the archival work in Ming Dynasty Hongwu period, sorts and analyzes the system, organizations and functions, as well as the overview of archives in Ming Dynasty Hongwu period. Thereby, this paper analyzes the development and historical limitations of the archival work in Hongwu period dialectically, in order to provide historical reference for modern archival work. In Ming Dynasty Hongwu period, the system of the archival work made detailed provisions in the aspect of writing, transmitting and managing of documents; the institutional management settings of archives was from the local to central archives Institutions, which laid foundation body for the development of archival work; in the aspect of file types, the file-government archives, household archives, personnel archives and other traditional archives were constantly enriched and improved, and the medical archives, astronomical archives, map archives and other technology archives have also been developed, and the religion archives was retained because the emperor’s religious policy "not only to promote and protect, but also to rectify and restrict"; in archives management, rules were clarified for the collection, sorting, preservation and use of archives, which laid the institutional foundation for archival work.
