In recent years, as the continuous development of mass and new media, media literacy attracts more and more attention of the domestic and foreign scholars to concern and study. Research on media literacy in our country began in 1990s, and gains a lot of achievement after more than ten years developing. However, on the basis of related literature research the author found that the object of previous research is relatively single, which is always focused on student, government officer, and journalist. Media literacy study on some special communities such as coal miners is little studied. Media literacy is an important index to evaluate the modern citizens’ comprehensive quality as scientific literacy is. To improve personal media literacy is also a national engineering. Coal miners, as a part of industrial labor, have formed a special social group, which play an important role in promoting the development of social economy and urbanization. Good media literacy can help coal miners to optimize their knowledge structure, to widen their horizon, to enhance the capacity of their use and criticism on media, and thereby to better serve their life and work by using media.In this study we selected coal miner in Huainan City as the research object, combined the questionnaire and depth interview, focused on the current situation of the capacity of coal miners media exposure, acknowledge, employment and criticism, and finally summarized the characteristics of the overall media literacy of coal miners. According to the author’s survey data and interview record, the level of overall media literacy of coal miners isn’t high. Mobile phone is the most useful media, while the traditional media such as newspapers and radio is relatively less. Coal miners have a certain recognition on media information, but still lack a deeper understanding and using capacity on media restricted by their own cultural and cognitive level.In view of the above survey results, the problems about media literacy of coal miners have been attribution analyzed, the corresponding solving countermeasures have been put forward from the government, media, enterprise, society and individual miner in order to improve the miners’ media literacy. The author obtained a large amount of data and information by on-the-spot investigation, comprehensively and objectively present the status quo of the miners’ media literacy combined of quantitative and qualitative approach. This study enrich the media literacy research database on different communities, also provides a quantitative reference of the future study on media literacy.
