As social media develop rapidly in the web2.0 environment, a variety of social media come into every aspect of our production and living, influencing people’s life style, way of thinking, and information access. The paper introduces the concept, the development, form of social media and advantages compared with traditional media. It also analyzes the impact of social media on archives in the construction of archives resources and the use of archives, that is, by enriching and optimizing the archives information resources and changing the mode of information service, people’s demand of information are satisfied. At the same time, it assesses and analyzes the present situation and problems of the application of social media in archives at home and abroad, mainly researching online and referring to relevant documents. Considering archives’ early use of social media and too much documents due to languages, the paper analyzes some more representative NARA in detail, and simply introduces the present situation of application of UK National Archives, National Archives of Australian and Library and Archives Canada, finding out the common existing problems of the application in archives at home and abroad. Furthermore, the paper mainly analyzes the problems of applying social media in China—the single form of delivery, the lack of interactivity among citizens and security system. At last, the paper put forward how to apply social media to Chinese archives after knowing about these current problems and advanced practice in foreign countries.
