Study On The News Reports Of "China Dream" From British Broadcasting Corporation (BBC)

"China Dream" is an important guiding ideology and governing philosophy of the new central collective leadership. Since General Secretary Xi Jinping publicly explained the concept of "China Dream" for the first time when he visited the "Revival Road" exhibition on November 29,2012, "China Dream" has not only become the focus of China’s mainstream media, but also it has got the attention of foreign mainstream media and public. British Broadcasting Corporation (BBC) is the largest broadcaster in UK and one of the most famous mainstream news media in the world. It is the major media platform for the public in UK and the world to know about China. Therefore, the study on "China Dream" reported by British Broadcasting Corporation (BBC) has important theoretical and practical significance. The author of this thesis used "China Dream" as the keyword to search the relevant news reports from November 29,2012 when "China Dream" was put forward to November 29, 2015 in the database of British Broadcasting Corporation (BBC) news websites and got a lot of first-hand text information. These data were then put through integrated quantitative and qualitative analysis to study the number of its presentation, content and frequency to get literal meaning and deep meaning of the "China Dream" reported by BBC as the representative of foreign media, which summed up the general view of BBC on " China dream" and analyzed the reasons. On this basis, the thesis made deep reflection on the external transmission mode and content of Chinese media, proposed solutions, created platform and means to enhance the effect and influence of Chinese external media communication and created a positive image of the media and country.This thesis includes four parts. The first part of the thesis is the introduction. In the introduction, the background and significance of the research is introduced; the research of the domestic scholars on this topic is sorted and reviewed; the research methods and theoretical basis are given to build a framework of the thesis. In the second part of the thesis, an overview and the programs of the British Broadcasting Corporation(BBC) is introduced and then the number and the appearance frequency of the reports related to "China Dream" is put though quantitative analysis to get the features of the numbers on the reported news; the thesis made deep and detailed qualitative analysis of the content of the news reports from both positive and negative faces of "China Dream" and get literal meaning and deep meaning of "China Dream". Finally, based on the quantitative and qualitative analysis above, the general view and conclusion of the British Broadcasting Corporation (BBC) on "Chinese dream" is obtained. Based on the framework theory, the third part analyzed the factors that had influenced the news reports of the British broadcasting Corporation (BBC) from a comprehensive perspective of ideology, cultural differences and national interests. The fourth part made a comparison on "China Dream" reports among British Broadcasting Corporation (BBC), "People’s Daily" and "People’s Daily (Overseas Edition)"and gained the different views and different positions towards "China Dream" reflected by the mainstream media at home and abroad. On the basis of the above conclusion, the fifth part put forward the thinking and countermeasures of China’s external communication media.Based on content analysis and overall evaluation of "China Dream" reported by British Broadcasting Corporation (BBC), the thesis got inspiration, made use of international media platform and cross-cultural communication strategies, combined Marxist ideology with discourse expression of Chinese Characteristics, and built China’s political image in an multi-dimensional perspective,striving to build external discourse system that reflected contemporary Chinese values,enriching and improving the theoretical systemic framework of the theory. On the condition that China’s international communication channels and methods, content and system are slightly weak, this thesis started from the mainstream foreign media, researched and assessed Chinese hot political discourse reported by western media, providing the Chinese media organizations a new research perspective. The news reported by British Broadcasting Corporation (BBC) reflected the views and positions under capitalist system and it is the media of British values, lifestyle and the western mode of thinking. Therefore, on the basis of objective and rational study, we can think about the way of expression with Chinese characteristics, build a wide range of international communication system and provide reference for our external media organizations and external sector to improve China’s national image in international political system and enhance the country’s cultural soft power.
