With the rapid development of optical communication and optical network technology, various types of passive optical network(XPON) technologies are widely used, and the size of the optical access network is more and more large. So the optical cable line monitoring and maintenance for optical distribution network(ODN) have been became one of important means ensuring the reliable operation of optical networking system. Operator operational statistics show that in recent years, the ratio of ODN line monitoring and maintenance to normal operation of the networking system is high, and will run to higher. In the face of the requests for growing bulky cable branches and improving communication quality as well as service quality, the traditional inefficient artificial maintenance mode could not meet the demand. In order to guarantee the efficient operation of optical networking system, it is necessary to provide intelligent operational facilities with reducing maintenance cost. Therefore, the research on centralized intelligent testing system for optical networking links is very necessary.The current states of research and application on the monitoring and maintenance in the optical networking links are surveyed and summarized based on which the research purpose and objective in this paper are given. Second, mainly focused on XPON based FTTx broadband access network, we discuss the network maintenance mode, design scheme and application systems. Then, we summarize and analyze the advantages and disadvantages of monitoring and maintenance operational systems used by the current domestic operators. The application and supporting environment of ODN line monitoring systems are analyzed, and the key points of their design are discussed in detail. Then, the centralized intelligent optical testing system of ODN analyzed in the details, specifically including measuring principle, system composition, analyses for application effect, and so on. At last, the system application example is given. This research results can provide the total solution for maintaining the efficient, reliable and steady operation of optic fiber link so that can shorten the time of failure and achieve active work of ODN. At the same time, the results may have a certain guiding significance on the network laid, hardware configuration, software development and system test.
