The Optical Time Domain Reflectometer, is an instrument that by analysis themeasuring curve to understand the certain properties of the fiber uniformity, defects, break,and connector coupling. By using the backscattered light generated by Fresnel scattering, itcan obtain the information of fiber attenuation, optical attenuation, splice loss, fiber faultpoint location and the loss of the optical fiber along the length distribution. It is alsoindispensable in fiber optic cable construction, maintenance, and cable monitoring. On theother hand, Passive Optical Network (PON) is a widely used technique which is popular inthe access networks. However, difficulties seem to arise when testing some of the manybranches of PON using traditional OTDRs. Compared to those conventional ones, OTDR forPON would be very different.This thesis summarizes and reviews the history and background of the OTDR system,unlike traditional OTDR, by theoretical and experimental studies, Two different newIntelligent OTDR monitoring system architecture are proposed for point-to-multipoint PONnetwork structure and the system parameters are calculated; through the pre-test, the systemplan for separate monitoring each branch and bypassing the1/64splitter is verified; and onan experimental platform, the resolution of100m and10m system performance is tested;which has meet the various functions of the system design. Design and build intelligentODN link detection system, compare to traditional systems can only be tested from the ONUside, this system can be implemented in the central office for real-time monitoring of theentire PON link, innovatively design two WDM structure around the splitter of large losses,and capable of distinguishing each branch.
