From the inscriptions on tortoise shells of ancient times to digital publishing of today, human being culture has been thriving for tens of thousands of years despite the drastically changed media. And the profound Chinese civilization created an equally remarkable publishing culture.Public culture facilities such as museums, libraries, publishing houses and archives play an important role in preserving and passing on publishing culture, especially museums, which are the main force of protecting cultural heritage in the publishing sector. However, heritage should not be protected behind a closed door, but meet the public so that people can appreciate its value. Publishing heritage needs to seek public recognition and participation instead of being simply written in books, or showed in museums or libraries. After all, the value of publishing heritage can only be achieved by being widely shared by the public.Today we have already entered a “micro era” when micro-style information dissemination based on the new media has become a new driving force of China’s social development, in particular, microblog website Weibo and messaging service WeChat, which are now the two most powerful “We Media” players. Looking back at the development of media, it took radio 38 years to reach 50 million users, 13 years for television, 4 years for the Internet, and 14 months for microblog(Sina Weibo), while WeChat users scaled up to 100 million in 433 days. This article will start off by focusing on passing on publishing heritage—the ultimate meaning of protecting it—and carry out a study on the use of Weibo and WeChat during the protection from the perspective of communications, so as to discuss the role of “We Media” in protecting publishing heritage.Given the positioning of museums and the use of Weibo and WeChat, as well as the nature and extension of publishing culture protection and its mechanism, the article chose four representative national museums, which are influential nationwide and feature good use of “We Media” forms, as the objects of the study. The four museums are National Museum of Classic Books, National Museum of Chinese Writing, China Printing Museum and Block Printing Museum at Yangzhou. The study found that though the protection organizations of publishing culture have realized that new forms of media including Weibo and WeChat provide convenient, swift, low-cost and interactive information dissemination, but the use of these forms are not satisfactory.
