Since the reform and opening up, Chinese economy has rocketed. Yet, with the rapid development of Chinese economy, some environment issues are following, such as environment pollution, ecological destruction, and climate warming. For decades, Chinese government and the press have given attentions to the environment problems, but made little achievements compared to other developed nations who have made great progress in environment cause. Japan, our developed neighbor, do better than us in environmental protection. This paper randomly selects 350 articles on environmental reports from Nanfang Daily and Asahi Shimbun, two of which enjoy great influence on its country.Through a detailed comparison of the reports, it mainly aims to find out the the features of their reports and the shortbacks of Chinese reports, thus provide some suggestions on how to improve the quality of environmental reports.This paper is consists of three parts. In the first part, it conducts an introduction of research background, research objective and relevant theories, and then carries out a detailed review of the source and the development of environmental report. The second part, the core of this paper, analyzes and compares the content of their reports from eight perspectives, such as theme, source, type, length, illustration, attitude, coverage area, as well as the number of named source. Last part makes a conclusion of the difference on news operation in Chinese press and Japanese press, an explanation of the reasons for the difference, along with the author’s advice.Through a deep analysis, the author finds out that compared to Asahi Shimbun, the reports from Nanfang Daily have the following features: strong political tones, lack of audience engagement, and mismatching of coverage area and environmental development and so forth. After a great deal of thought, the author offers several pieces on how to tackle the deficits of Nanfang Daily’s reports. This paper hopes to provide a reference on how to improve the quality of Chinese environmental reports.
