The internet of things technology is a communication method in the new era. Interconnection and communication of things can be achieved through internet of things. Currently, the internet of things technology is widely used in the product barcode, automotive electronics and other fields. It has smart and flexible benefits. In recent years, the application of internet of things technology gradually extends to a number of studies in the field of smart grid and causes widespread concern in the power industry. Based on the systematic study of internet of things technology, the internet of things technology is applied to the power cable partial discharge online monitoring system. In the cable partial discharge online monitoring system, wireless networking, data communications and other key problems is conducted in-depth research. A new cable online monitoring system is designed and proposed based on the internet of things.Firstly, the development history of the internet of things is introduced. By comparing a variety of wireless communication technology, ZigBee is the wireless communication method in the online monitoring system. The principles of ZigBee networking and communication technology are researched in detail. Then, for core problems of the internet of things in the online monitoring system, the hardware platform and the software design of the wireless communication system are mainly researched. The hardware platform of the wireless communication system includes ZigBee module and controlling unit. Controlling unit includes the OK6410 Linux board and the LM3S9B96 ARM board. Based on the hardware platform, the software design of cable partial discharge online monitoring system includes signal acquisition system and ZigBee networking and communication. It elaborates the theories of the signal acquisition system and specific ZigBee communication command structure of partial discharge pulse data’s wireless communication. Finally, in order to verify the reliability of the developed online monitoring system, we built the system in five substation sites and put it into operation to generate the partial discharge data. Then we recorded the data to database on upper computer for statistic analysis. At last, we summarize the research results and outlook its prospect.
