Large scale rotary motors are crucial equipment in power systems. So far, improvements in safety and stability during motor operation play an essential role in optimization of stability in electrical power systems. Statistically, stator insulation failures account for 40% of all total failures in motors, while stator insulation failures are primarily caused by partial discharge. How to monitor partial discharge in motors and the developmental trend of partial discharge in motors have become an urgent demand. Therefore, usage of partial discharge online supervision system platform is very important. The paper's discussion on partial discharge monitoring system is based on C/S structure in real time monitoring systems, combining demands of electrical system clients and also specific requirements established by partial discharge experts on electrical motor boards, confirming specific system actualization plan. The system uses Microsoft SQL Server 2008 as the database, NI company Labview environment as a platform, Windows xp Sp3 or higher 32bit/64 bit system as running platform. The hardware used in the system is high-voltage ceramic capacitive sensor, high-frequency digital acquisition card, low-frequency digital acquisition card, 1000 Mbps photoelectric converter and fan-less back high-performance industrial computer. System testing demonstrates good performance, user-friendly interface, concise operations, and stability. This paper describes in detail large scale partial discharge monitoring system requirements, which includes motor management requirements, user management requirements, motor alarm management requirements, data collection and management requirements, partial discharge intelligent analysis and diagnosis requirements and partial discharge signal analysis requirements. The paper then describes the model structure of the system. Building on requirement analysis, the design of the system is discussed, and the module allocation of the system design are given.Based on module allocation results, detailed description and explanation of user management module, alarm management module, motor management module and data acquisition card management module was provided. Then, database design and explanations are provided as well. The main modules are given based on design: the management module, user management module, alarm management module, parameter setting module, data acquisition and analysis module; furthermore, the paper discusses insufficiencies in the system and associated future improvements in function and performance. After actualization of this system, further trend analysis of electrical motor insulation can be performed; alarms can be used before motor insulation problems occur, which provides correct instructions for motor maintenance and shutdown plan, and bring great economic benefits to enterprises.
