Bar code technology is based on machine vision and machine reading technology. Its purpose is to read symbol information extracted from one-dimensional or two-dimensional barcode images. Bar code technology has been widely used in many fields, including production line management, logistics and supply chain management, e-commerce, POS and so on. bar code recognition system can be seen everywhereAmong various bar code recognition technologies, one-dimensional bar code recognition technique is the most popular one which have been widely used on the world. The barcode image consisted of a series of bars and spaces, which are printed with black or white color respectively. In essence these bars and spaces with different reflect rates are encoded with regular rules as binary code. One dimensional bar code image can be captured through laser scanner, camera, scanner device etc. The acquisition image is transmitted to a PC or embedded processor of the system, and is processed and decoded, finally extracted the necessary bar code character information and complete the process of automatic recognition.This dissertation focused the research on 1D barcode technology. In order to reach the purpose of small-size and low power, the methodology for designing embedded system was adopted and the related algorithms for image processing and noised filters were realized. Finally an embedded 1D barcode identification system was completed based ARM processor, in which integrated with signal capturing, data processing and display module. The main points of the studies in the dissertation include:(1). At first, make the study and analysis of the history of barcode development(2). Secondly, make the introduction of the basic concept and principal of 1D barcode technology and identification system.(3). Thirdly, study the design flow and the architecture of the dedicated system,from the viewpoint of designing an smart embedded system.(4). Then, study the algorithm and programming methodology for barcode identification system in details, including digital filter algorithm, relative image pre-processing algorithm, edge detect algorithm etc. Finally we realized the necessary programming work for digital signal processing and decoder, and completed the algorithm program porting into the ARM processor.(5). Study how to design the hardware circuit based ARM processor, and also complete the simulation work.(6). Finally, the necessary tests and experiments have been done on the developed 1D barcode identification platform. The results indicated the system meet the demands for application and specification requirement.
