In nowadays, along with the increasing development of science and technology, the barcode has become a commodity trading language. The commodity on the market will beidentified by various types of bar code. More and more developed and improved bar codetechnology promotes the development of electronic commerce, improves productivity andoperating efficiency.With the rapid development of computer networks and the application of smart phonesand other equipment, first we can understand the information, identify the authenticity of thegoods, but also we can quickly understand the information of the relevant goods by takingpictures for bar code, and then using the network. The methods of image processing andrecognition need to be used to locate the bar code area. Using digital image processingmethod, the quality of the image can be improved first, to reduce or eliminate the bad effectson barcode reading caused by noise, nonuniform illumination, image blur, et al. Then we canlocate the barcode area, read and decode the barcode.In this paper, first of all the encoding rules of barcode for commodity are discussed. Thenusing digital image processing methods, the barcode area is localized. Finally, for the lowquality of the bar code images taken by mobile phones and other equipment including lowresolution and a lot of noise, image blur, perspective tilt because of insufficient lightequipment shake and camera angles, respectively, we proposed a new barcode readingmethods based projection curve and a new barcode decoding methods based on the global andlocal Euclidean distance algorithm.The algorithms in this paper are all simulated in MATLAB environment. Various testresults in the bar code library show that our algorithms for barcode localization andrecognition are effective for image noise, nonuniform illumination, image blur. And Thealgorithms have the advantages of simple, high recognition rate, real-time etc.
