Virtual reality technologies can construct a virtual scene which is almost the same as its proto in reality, giving a vivid feeling to the visitors. Virtual reality systems could have immersion, interactivity and imagination characters, and a broad prospect for development.This thesis which is based on the theory of virtual reality, using the techniques such as 3D MAX, VRML, Java and JavaScript etc. design a virtual reality system on the Internet for a Normal University. Generally speaking, the design of 3D models achieves a good effect, and it analyzes the interactivity of the system deeply. The main contents and contributions are as follows:(1) The techniques and research status of the virtual reality system and technologies are discussed, and basis theory of the virtual reality system is introduced.(2) Techniques such as 3D MAX, VRML, Java and JavaScript are applied in the process of constructing the virtual reality system. Besides, the 3D models of dining hall, students’activity center, teaching building, laboratory building, dormitory, gymnasium, library, hospital, and cars are constructed in the system. The system can be visited on the Internet, which is an immersive, interactive and imaginative a virtual environment.(3) For the modeling of the complex objects, the system applies polygon method, NURBS method and VRML method respectively according to different types of objects, showing the processes of constructions. However, for a system designer, he is always trying to get a highest fidelity of the models with a lowest cost, which is a contradiction. To do this, we combine the method of 3DS MAX with the method of texture mapping.Specifically, the method of 3DS MAX is used for the main buildings and landmark buildings, and the method of texture mapping for the others. In addition, with the introduction of LOD techniques in VRML, the conflict is solved.(4) Finally, for the detailed design of the virtual reality system, a series of interactive functions such as the play of audio and video, the effect of fluttering trees, auto-door, collision detection, emotional connection, map navigation control, interface navigation control and online publishing etc. are realized in the present system.
