3D models are often used to help students develop the ability of space imagination and the ability of imagery thinking on engineering drawing education. However, traditional instructional models can't be taken maximum advantage because of being restricted by time and space. Therefore, designing and developing a network virtual model room that can be visited and used by students whenever and wherever possible to replace traditional instructional model room is a subject with practical purpose. However, at present, the virtual model room developed by domestic graphics experts is just a model library consisted of single models in essence. Students can't get the experience of roaming and visiting like being in a real model room. What's more, it lacks due sense of immersion and interactivity. A vivid virtual drawing model room is proposed, and furthermore is constructed, which creates "you-are-there" experience in virtual roaming for the students. It has strong character of real-time, interactivity and sense of immersion. The features of VRML (virtual reality modeling language) are analyzed. The key technologies of realizing virtual reality system are studied, including the VRML modeling technology, mechanism of event routing, technology of viewpoint controlling, communication mechanism between VRML scene and Java.Through the use of VRML and Java, the real-time interactive virtual model room has been set up. The 3D models in the room could be observed in any direction and operated freely. Automatic roaming and automatic switch of virtual scenes could be realized. At the same time, virtual assembling animation and real-time interactive animation of successive alternation of 3D models could be realized. The building of virtual model room can be expected to fulfill the students' demand on model, and provide a vivid learning environment and must get widespread use on graphics education.
