With the rapid construction of PON network, PON equipment market is facing a new development opportunity. Various standards, equipments and applications based on PON technology, have developed rapidly, and the market demand of their supporting test equipment or instrumentation will also be further increased. Meanwhile, in order to manage, monitor and maintain various optical network working terminals and access equipments easily, to ensure a better user experience, the development of the network protocol analyzer will enter a new stage. Given this, a practical PON network protocol analyzer is studied and designed in this thesis, based on the EPON protocol system.In the R&D process, our study focuses on the technologies of the frame acquisition system in the Physical Layer and Data Link Layer. At the Physical Layer, the logic functions of the PMA, PCS and RS are mainly explored. For the PMA, the LVDS data receiving module is studied. The PCS has the capability of providing the synchronization state detecting, control code detecting, 8B/10 B decoding, FEC decoding and other important functions. In the RS, the data frames are parsed and checked. In the Data Link Layer, the logic function of the MAC layer is realized, in which, according to the user’s demands, the data from upper layer are firstly filtered, and then the required frames are packed into Ethernet frames structure, finally these frames are transmitted, via SGMII interface, to computer for analysis.The development environment of this subject is Quartus II software produced by Altera Company. Within this environment, Verilog HDL is used to construct the frame acquisition system; and the embedded SignalTap II logic analyzer and waveform simulation tool are employed to test the designed modules. Additionally, Modelsim is used as a third-party simulation tool to simulate some large modules.Finally, using the contrasted test platform, the frame acquisition system of the designed EPON protocol analyzer has been real-timely tested to capture various messages on demand. After analyzing the captured packets, the results verify stability and practicality of the proposed protocol analyzer.
