This paper introduces the application and development situation of domestic and overseas image processing and a variety of constructions and characteristics of the image processing system. By analyzing the characteristics of DSP and FPGA chip, it proposes the real-time image processing system which is based on the multi-core DSP+FPGA.It makes the whole system different from traditional image processing system and it gives the full play to the high processing capacity of multi-core DSP and the flexible advantage of FPGA. It can be better adapted to the request of the algorithms of distinct image and it also can improve the image processing system’s instantaneity, stability and flexibility.This paper introduces image processing algorithm systematically. According to the algorithm of image and the design requirements and application environments of image processing system, it determines to choose TMS320C6657 dual-core DSP from TI company as the main processing chip and FPGA from Altera company’s Cyclone IV series as the assist processing chip. After introducing this two core components of this system, it analyzes architecture of the system and constitute of hardware’s each function module in detail. The whole system’s video image data is collected by the CMOS image sensor. FPGA as the co processor receives the data of image, and sent the data to the main processing chip DSP. Finally the FPGA will show the data through VGA interface.The whole system analyzes the advantages of multi-core DSP and FPGA in image processing system. It concludes various parameters selection, connection type and other problems. By the logical control of peripheral equipment and image data from FPGA, adding to the supportive from dual-core DSP,it gives full to play the advantages of this two kinds of chip. It ensures the system’s instantaneity, stability and flexibility, and makes the whole system a high cost performance. It solves the needs of high-speed real-time image processing.
