MP3 technology develops very rapidly and occupies a leading position in the field of audio. Today, it is developed very speedy at the end of PC platform, but MP3 encoder is rare in market, which independents the PC, so it is a very good research direction.This paper studies the MP3 encoding algorithm, FPGA technology, hardware accelerator, and its implementation on DE2-70 board. The processes are divided into hardware parts and software parts. Among them, the software parts are implemented by C in NIOSII, and the hardware parts are achieved by verilog HDL. The whole design work includes:1) to implement MP3 encoding algorithms using MATLAB, which ensure the coding algorithms are correct;2) to implement MP3 encoding algorithm using C language on PC;3) to design hardware accelerator in order to increase the speed of the encoding system;(4) to complete the algorithm by the hardware and software co-design approach and verify it by playing the MP3 file encoded.Final testing and verification prove that the hardware accelerators designed works wel, the files encoded can be played by audio player, and the sound quality is very good.
