Cultural heritage is an important legacy derived from the development of society, which is not only the evidence of human development, but also contains a wealth of information on culture and arts which are important sources for designers to accomplish creative design. With the development of computer technology, the digitization of cultural heritage and its protection have made great progress. But there doesn’t have formed a knowledge base that contains historical and cultural and artistic knowledge which is available to designers to do creative design.Also, the traditional methods to digitize cultural heritages have shortcomings in knowledge representation and retrival. The purpose of our research is to build a knowledge base which contains inherent information about cultural heritage and supports intelligent retrieval. We concentrated our research on the ontology building and management techniques. The main results are as follows:1. According to the data characteristics of cultural heritage and research on ontology construction methods, we proposed ontology construction method Incremental seven-step method based on the idea of iteration. Then used it building a relatively complete heritage ontology. Our method considered the process of ontology construction as an incremental process. It increases ontology evaluation compared with the traditional seven-step method, realizes by pellet reasoning engine and requirements specification to determine whether the ontology is completed.This method ensures the ontology quality.2. Researched on the technique expand ontology knowledge base by rule-based reasoning. We got the inference rules by association rule mining, then formalized the rules with SWRL and completed reasoning with Jess. Designed knowledge base retrieval model, using the edit distance method to compute the similarity of user inputs and ontology vocabularies and adding semantic by rule-based reasoning and ontology relation, then search the base by Jena.3. We designed the ontology heritage knowledge base management system which used the B/S architecture. The presentation layer accomplished the display of the knowledge. The business logic layer achieved ontology management and retrieval through Jena. The data layer is responsible for the permanent store of the knowledge. Our system was designed to ensure the knowledge management function and a good user experience.
