With the rapid development of Internet, the size of the optical fibercommunication network becomes larger and larger, and people’s requirements of thereliability and stability of the optical fiber communication becomes higher and higher.Nowadays, the most important optical fiber management maintenance method is24-hour monitoring optical fiber, depending on the on-line monitoring system ofoptical fiber, which can warn the situation of the optical fiber and find out the locationof fault points. Although optic fiber monitoring technology is growing more mature,however, the on-line monitoring system of optical fiber doesn’t achieve thelarge-scale popularization and application, which is due to the cost, installation and soon.It is significant to design a cost-effective, reliable, and convenient optical fiber tothe communication and internet field. This study is mainly focused on the applicationof optical fiber on optical fiber online monitoring system based on the abovebackground and needs. The main work include:First, based on the current optical fiber monitoring system, this study brought upa new monitoring method by utilizing lighting mode and error rates for surveillanceand OTDR for detection; For the hardware design, a highly-integrated, low costunified terminal was designed by selecting STM32as CPU, ENC28J60as Ethernetchip, and combining GPRS and GPS modes. For the software system, a complete setof online optical fiber monitoring system was developed by implanting open sourceand free embedded operation system into the terminal and combining the monitoringcenter with organized B/S WebGIS techniques.After the system is developed, the mode verification test and practical validationtest were performed and have achieved the corresponding technical requirements.From the view of the data testing, this system demonstrates its reliability and accuracyfor long-term use and has been successfully operated.
