The application of fiber optical cables in electric power system telecommunication network is getting more and more popularized in recent years. The telecommunications, automation, and maintenance of power systems rely increasingly on reliable and high performance optical fiber transmission. In fact, fiber optical cables are susceptible to damage owing to the factors such as external force and cable quality itself, so as to degrade the transmission quality of the cable. This situation presents new requirement and challenge to the Optical Fiber Monitoring System (OFMS).Starting with fiber optic transmission mechanism and optical fiber monitor technology, taking network communication as carrier and GIS as instrumentality, In this paper, we particularly discusses and researches module component and function realization of the OFMS, then introduces a automatic online monitoring and detecting system of fiber cable based on the characteristic of Tangshan electric power telecommunication network, which give a advanced maintained method and which can detect the malfunction spot of fiber cable quickly and precisely and save time for repair of fiber cable troubles. This provide a reliable safeguard for the high quality, high efficiency,secure and stable transmission about Tangshan electric power optical telecommunication network.
