Nowadays, along with the improvement of people’s living standard and the development of technology, the concept of smart home has been widely used. As the center of smart home, residential gateway plays a significant role in the house. However, the residential gateways products are generally desgined for special use, which are expensive and distinct. Besides, current data processing speed on residential gateways are quite slow to fulfill users’ demand.Based on the analysis of residential gateway and open router technology both at home and abroad and the consideration of practical demand of residents, a design and implement of intelligent gateway system based on Open WRT(OWIG for short) is proposed. The OWIG system is design on two related platforms, the hardware platform and the software platform.The hardware platform consists of an Open WRT based router, some sensors for supervising use and other end-point devices for network access. To improve the data transfroming speed, we also design an advanced serial-line protocol for these hardware devices to interact with the software platform.In this paper, we design a web-based server as the software platform, which contains three layers, the data pre-processing layer and business logic layer and the user interface in turn from bottom to top.At the data pre-processing layer,we disign the data processing progress between the Lu CI web structure and the Open WRT UCI interfaces. At the business logic layer, we design four logic parts for users, which are user managing module, device managing module, file managing module and the service module.Specially, for the secure reason, we design the implement of parent control system and the visitor network in the OWIG system.According to the design and implementation, we implement simulations for many times to test the feasibility and applicability of the OWIG sytem as well. We find that the CPU usage is within control even there are so many network and I/O requests.
