The traditional radio has a single transceiver mode and needs the high hardware requirements, all these limit the interoperability and the compatibility between radios. It is difficult for traditional radio to meet the modern radio technology on better transmission performance. Compared with the short-wave communications, the ultrashort wave communication has high stability, high capacity, high signal intensity, high frequency utilization and anti-jamming performance, etc., which makes the VHF band widely used in the civilian and military aspects.The project comes from "Integrated Services Unit for Combined Radio". The author is responsible for the debugging of digital processing unit of the entire VHF radio and is involved in the design of each module and interfaces between modules. The radio,including a transmitter and a receiver, wherein the digital processing unit is the core of the whole station and whose hardware using DSP + FPGA architectures.The system architecture of VHF radio and the work flow of main module is introduced in this paper first. Then, we focus on the FM radio in the digital modem, digital down conversion,interfaces between modules. And a detail introduction and discussion on digital baseband signal processing have been proposed coupled with the basic principles of multi-rate signal processing. Finally, based on the simulation results, we accomplish the VHF radio designs through DSP+FPGA hardware platform in compatibility mode and CDMA mode including the software design for module interface, and the digital IF signal processing, also the modulation and demodulation for such signal processing.We also accomplish the design of those modules and verify the feasibility of the hardware circuit.
