This research follows the new trend of global TV, introduces the hit concept-TV format, analyzes the role China plays in the TV format market and the urgency to develop TV formats of its own, so as to provide TV researchers and producers with practical suggestions based on the experiences of foreign countries.This research gives a detailed definition about TV format, traces the development of formats trade through Diffusion of Innovations Theory and Economics of Innovation, and illustrates China’s awkward situation that the formats import number is much bigger than the export one. Then the research analyzes what economical and cultural effects it brings to China. In the economic dimension, imitation innovation leads to capital loss, resources waste and format dependence. In the cultural dimension, theories of dependency, glocalisation and cultural industry are applied to explain the complexity of TV format, which is frame with ideology. It appears to give enough space to local culture, while it still has hidden purpose of invasion. By this the research points out the situation China is confronted with, and the urgency to develop TV format. In the end, through interviewing the creative group in TV industry, the research sums up the mature producing procedure and mechanism of TV formats overseas, giving reference to the strategies for China TV formats’ breakout.TV formats international trade, as a new trend in TV market, the study of which is limited and disorganized. This research focuses on this new subject, gives detailed introduction to TV formats and its development, an organized analysis of potential threat China is confronted with, and a practical suggestion regarding production.
